Kindergarten Round-up

Thank you so much to all our Prek4 parents who came out for Kindergarten Round-up last night. Please let us know how we can continue to create a smooth transition for you and your child.

Progress Reports

Progress Reports are going home today for elementary students. Please review your child’s report, sign, and return on Monday. (If your child did not receive a Progress Report, please call in Kim in bookkeeping and clear up any past due balances.)

Re-Enrollment

Our re-enrollment season for the 2012/13 school year is now underway! “In-house” enrollment will take place until March 3. During this time, class spaces are reserved for current CCA students. After this date, open enrollment will begin and class spaces will go to any qualifying student on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to secure your child’s spot for next school year, we must have two items: the Re-enrollment form and the $100 Registration Fee. The form is available in the school office and is also online on the Forms and Information page.

Financial Incentives

When re-enrolling for next school year, you may want to consider taking advantage of an early-pay rewards program. For parents who pay their registration fee and the entire book fee by June 1, they will receive a $100 discount on August tuition. If you want to take advantage of this, but need a payment program to stretch these fees over several months, call Kim Young in bookkeeping at 281-440-1155, ext. 204, and she will be happy to set one up for you!

President’s Day

Please remember that Monday, February 20 is a student holiday. Our preschool building staff has in-service on that day. Both buildings are closed and no care is available.

Go Texan Day

Go Texan Day will be celebrated this year on Friday, February 24. Students are encouraged to dress up in their best rodeo attire. One western wear winner will be selected from each class.

Math Olympics

If your child qualified for the third and final round of the Math Olympics, please remember to set aside Saturday, February 25 for this event. We have sent home information today to parents of all qualifying students. It is also available on the Forms and Information page. Please take a moment to read this information carefully. Let us know if you have any questions.

Art Festival

Our annual qualifying Art Festival is coming up in March and is the forerunner for the ACSI festival in April. All students, Kinder through 5th grades, are working on art in their classes and will receive an art grade on their Report Card during the third nine weeks. (All art produced for the festival must be done at school. Work completed at home will not be accepted.)

March Lunch Order deadline – February 27

Menus and elementary lunch order forms for March are going home today. In order to avoid any disruption in March lunches, you must have your lunch order returned with payment no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, February 27. Please remember that late lunch orders cannot be handled through the school. For late orders, you must call the HLB at 281-444-8444 or 832-372-8300.

Fifth and Sixth Grade

As most of you know, we have completed our polling of Fifth grade parents, and believe we have the commitment level to add Sixth Grade next year! Therefore, we are moving ahead with plans to do just that. Some of the plans include adding a science lab next year and also replacing one of our preschool playgrounds with a basketball court. We are also planning a schedule of monthly outings as well. We are looking at many other options and will be focused on setting up this program for the next several months. We are very excited that some younger grades will also be able to take advantage of changes that will be made to accommodate middle school grades. For example, fourth and fifth grade classrooms will benefit from the science lab on a bi-monthly basis.

As you all know, with the changes we’re making, CCA will be committing a lot of funds with the addition of Sixth grade. This will mean hiring new staff, funding for the science lab, and so on. This is why, when I talked with each Fifth grade parent, I told you guys that to begin following through with this project, we need parents who are committed to sixth grade next year (fifth grade parents this year) to pay their $100 Registration Fee and $100 of their book fee by March 15. We have already had some parents follow through with this financial commitment and we thank you so much for your quick action to do so! If you are planning to be here in sixth grade, but need help with payments for the $200 commitment, please call myself or Kim Young and we will help you with that.

We are very excited about what the 2012/13 school year will hold! We will be sending out more information as the plans for sixth grade development. We also welcome any input, suggestions, or questions you may have about this new venture. Please feel free to call me and I’ll help in any way I can. As always, we appreciate you!

Science Fair News

Our annual science fair is a required event for third, fourth, and fifth grade students and will take place on March 1. The finished project is worth TWO major test grades and they accumulate daily/quiz grades every week for seven weeks in connection with the Science Fair. This means that their science project can greatly HELP or HURT their science grade during the third nine weeks. Your child should have started working on this project by now. Please let us know if you have any questions.

CORRECTION

Last Friday, we mistakenly listed the date of Open House as March 2. It is actually next Thursday, February 2. This event marks the beginning of the enrollment season for the 2012 – 13 school year and is scheduled for next Thursday, February 2 at 6 p.m. There will be time set aside for parents to visit the classrooms that their child is in this year and also where they will be next year. We strongly encourage parents of children in grades Kinder and above to attend. If your child is in Prek4, you are also welcome to attend, but we actually have a special Open House planned just for you. It’s called Kindergarten Round-up and is scheduled for Thursday, February 16. Keep watching Chatter news for more information.

Report Cards should have been signed and returned by now. If you have not yet returned your child’s Report Card, please do so right away.

Thank You to HPD Senior Officer Joseph Martinez

We want to say a special thanks to Officer Martinez for visiting our Prek4 classes last Friday. He talked about the importance of making good choices, doing your best in school, and listening to parents & teachers. All the kids had a fun time and learned some great lessons! Officer Martinez is the father of Victoria Martinez, Prek4C Aide. Thanks Victoria for sharing your dad with us!

Best Wishes to the Hale Family

Fifth grader Jace Hale has been staying with his grandparents in Houston this school year while mom was serving our country in Afghanistan. It brought tears to our eyes this week when we got to be in on her surprise return! We are so happy for Jace who will be going back home to Virginia with his mom, but we will miss this special family very much. Thanks for letting us be a part of the answer for Jace this year and thank you for serving our country.

Champions Chatter – CORRECTION

Please note… the Chatter you received yesterday contained an incorrect date for our winter Open House. The correct date is Thursday, February 2 at 6pm.

This event marks the beginning of the enrollment season for the 2012-13 school year, and is a great time to get caught up on any changes, spring events, 2012/13 tuition rates and so on. There is also time set aside for parents to visit the classroom. We strongly encourage parents of children in grades Kinder and above to attend.

If your child is in Prek4, you are also welcome to attend, but we actually have a special Open House planned just for you. It’s called Kindergarten Round-up and is scheduled for February 16.

February Lunch Orders

We are unable to send you February lunch menus and elementary order forms today because of a computer problem at Healthy Lunchbox this week. Because of this delay, we will send out these items as early next week as possible – hopefully on Monday. Therefore, it is VERY IMPORTANT for all elementary parents to be watching for this information that will not come home in the Friday Red Folder like normal, but will come home in daily binders. Lunch orders for February are due NO LATER THAN Monday, January 30 by 8:30 a.m., so please be watching for the order forms early next week and return them no later than the 30th. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Second Grade Science

Although our second graders are not allowed to participate in the ACSI event in our region, we have a second grade project that helps them to learn how to compete academically. It helps them to begin to gain higher level cognitive and organizational skills as well as learn about presentation skills. All those Christmas gifts…

Hi Mom and Dad,

We’re back into the full swing of school since Christmas. The staff and children are off to a great start in 2012. There is one area of concern that we’ve had where we need your help!

Some of our students (Prek4 through 5th grade) have been bringing all those Christmas presents to school with them. Our handbook states that children are not allowed to bring toys, electronics, cards, books and so on from home. The purpose for this policy is as follows:

  1. When they are at CCA, they are at school and their teachers have planned the day for them. Toys, cards, and other items from home are very disruptive to the learning process.
  2. We cannot replace items that are lost, stolen, broken, damaged and so on. This policy not only protects the learning process of all students, but it hopefully protects your child’s personal property as well.
  3. We are a private, Christian school. By the nature of this, there may be different opinions from each family about what is acceptable and what is not. By asking each family to keep all recreational materials at home, we can avoid any child being exposed to materials that their family may find objectionable.

The only exception to this rule would be if a teacher had a classroom lesson or event where she explicitly asked the students to bring something from home. (For example, this could include an event like a Classroom Show N’ Tell Day.) Our handbook states that when these kinds of materials are found at school, they will be confiscated. If confiscated, the parent may pick it up in the office. Items not picked up at the end of each semester will be donated to local children’s charities.

We really appreciate your help in enforcing this policy with your child. We are thankful for all you do and are looking forward to an awesome 2012 together!

Christmas Parties

Thank you so much to everyone who brought goodies and treats for Christmas parties. We all had a great time and we appreciate your help!

Christmas Holiday

It’s almost Christmas! Elementary students will be on Christmas Holiday from Dec. 19 – Jan. 2. (School resumes on Tuesday, January 3.) Holiday Camp will be available for students who have registered for this service. There is no additional charge for Prek4 students, but they were asked to return a reservation form so that we can prepare staffing and order food accordingly. Tuition continues normally regardless of attendance. For elementary students, the fee for Holiday Camp is $22 per day or $88 for a 4-day week and $110 for a 5-day week. Fees are due in advance. Reservation forms were due on Tuesday, Dec. 13. If you need care but did not return a form, you should call the office by 4 p.m. to check on availability.

Uniform Code for Winter Wear Reminder

As you are buying winter outer wear, we want to remind everyone that our handbook states that any outer wear worn inside school (such as jackets, sweaters, hoodies, etc.) must be plain. (Plain is free of any words, phrases, pictures, designs, sports logos, etc.) This includes leggings. It is fine for girls to wear leggings (or stockings) in cold weather, but they must be plain colors that match the uniform. (Examples would be navy, black, hunter green, or white.)

IMPORTANT REMINDER

Please remember that if you want a lunch for your child on January 3 when we return to school, you cannot wait until that day to order. Healthy Lunchbox is a separate company from us. (We do not work for HLB and cannot handle any late orders for them.) They cater to thousands of school children in the Houston area every day and we’re only one small part of their business. So if you do not order a lunch, they will not know you want one and they will not send one for your child. Also, if you order past the deadline, you are taking a chance that your order might not be processed by the day you need it. Please be sure to always pay special attention to lunch order deadlines to ensure no interruption in your child’s lunch service.

January Lunch Orders

January elementary orders were due today. Orders will be accepted during camp until Dec. 23, but please note that any orders turned in after today will be considered late. To ensure that January lunches are not interrupted, you should turn your order in by the close of business today. If you turn it in during the first week of Christmas Camp, please call the HLB as well to insure that your January lunches are not interrupted.

You can also mail orders directly to HLB over the holiday. Their mailing address is 614 W. Greens, Houston, TX 77067. If mailing, remember it is the holiday season and mail will be slowed. You should mail early and call HLB directly to confirm they received the order.

Please remember that late lunch orders cannot be handled through the school. For late orders, you must call the HLB at 281-444-8444 or 832-372-8300.
